Temperature Sensitive Chemicals

Winter is quickly approaching; the sun is down by 5pm and freezing temperatures are creeping in! Protect your business by making smart choices.

After speaking with a variety of our vendors and distributors, we’ve compiled a list of categories of winter-friendly chemicals and those that will certainly get damaged if left out in the cold.

Learn which chemicals are temperature sensitive and what to do if they freeze!

Categories of Chemicals

Powder Chemicals

First and foremost, powdered chemicals are safe to keep out in cold temperatures. They may change in appearance by clumping but this shouldn’t affect the strength of the product. Powdered chemicals are considered “safe” when in powder form. When mixing your powder into liquid, take necessary precautions.

Protectors, Floor Finishes, Sealer, Polishes, Coatings/Paints

Protectors, floor finishes, sealers, polishes, and coatings/paint are notoriously delicate and extremely temperature sensitive. Some protectors have the ability to recover, but most will not. It is recommended to keep this category of products in temperatures between 50°-90°F or they could be permanently damaged.

Do not freeze the following products,

  • Sentinel 538 Smoke & Odor Encapsulant
  • Sentinel 539 Smoke & Odor Encapsulant with Antimicrobial
  • Sentinel 24-7 Zero Interior Coating
  • Sentinel 24-7 Zero HVAC Mold & Mildew Resistant Coating
  • Sentinel 24-7 Construction Coating
  • Essential Industries Pantheon Concrete Sealer
  • Essential Industries X-Coat Nano
  • Essential Industries X-Coat Nano HS
  • Hydro-Force Hardwood Preservation Satin Finish
  • Hydro-Force Hardwood Preservation Satin Gloss
  • StonePro GP3 Granite Polish

Enzyme Products

Products with enzymes are also delicate when it comes to freezing temperatures, the enzymes in the product will die and will not recover.

Enzyme Products

  • Relief (DSC Products – Powder)
  • Bio-Release (Bridgepoint)
  • Un-duz-it Unleashed (ODORx)
  • Bio-Modifier Xtreme (Bridgpoint)
  • Liquid Alive (Dymon)

Solvent-Based Products

Solvents are much easier to work with in freezing temperatures because they freeze at a much lower temperature than water. When in doubt, use with caution.

Solvents

  • Fibre-Tec OMS (DSC Products)
  • Super Sealer (Saiger’s Sauce)
  • All-Solv Vandalism Remover (Bridgepoint)

Water-Based Products

Water-based products can recover if they freeze. It is recommended to let the product naturally thaw. Do not use external heat sources to warm up your products. Once your product has thawed, gently shake or mix product before using. Note: Diluted products freeze more easily than concentrates.

Water-Based Products – anything you can dilute with water.

Equipment

Remember to empty/purge your equipment of water and/or chemicals. Any residual water left behind will freeze, expand, and cause permanent damage.

Examples of Equipment

  • Sprayers
  • Foggers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Portable Extractors
  • Waste Tanks
  • Pressure Lines
  • Fittings

Taking the time to drain and/or winterize your equipment will save you time and money in the long run.

In the Upper Midwest, freezing temperatures aren’t new to us but they definitely work against us. Plan ahead with freeze/thaw stable chemicals, store temperature sensitive chemicals in a heated space, remove temperature sensitive chemicals from vehicles left outside, and don’t forget to drain your equipment. Follow these recommendations and you’ll have a worry-free winter!
