Understanding Carpet Cleaning & Restoration Jets
What are Jets?
In short, jets are also known as small nozzles on the head of a carpet cleaning wands, tools, rotary heads and other cleaning and restoration equipment that control water flow, pressure, and heat for efficient cleaning.
Jet Materials
Jets come in brass, stainless steel, and sometimes nylon/plastic. Brass jets are most common and typically inexpensive but are more prone to corrosion than stainless steel requiring frequent replacement.
Stainless steel jets are more durable and resistant to wear and chemicals and are commonly used with higher pressure systems or heavy professional use.
Nylon/Plastic jets are mainly used in systems where lower pressure is being used like pump-up sprayers and some detail tools. These jets can be preferred when using high acidic or alkaline solutions that night corrode metal jets.
Jet Types
T-Jets – are flat-bottom nozzles that sit in a separate holder; this holder threads into the wand manifold. Commonly used on many carpet cleaning wands and tools for easy removal and compact size.
V-Jets – are external jets with threads that screw directly into the manifold or tool body. They product a “V” pattern and are commonly used on single-jet, dual-jet, and multi-jet carpet wands.
Flood Jets – Wide-angled jet with high-flor and a larger orifice to put down more solution with larger droplets. These jets are less prone to clogging and commonly used when heavy flushing is required, such as some hard-surface or restoration rinse tools.
Reading Jet Numbers
Jet Numbers
All jets will have numbers on them (if they haven’t been worn off). The first 2-3 digits in each number tells you the spray angle of the jet you are using. For example, if the jet number is 11002 the spray angle is 110 degrees. If the jet number is 9503, the spray angle is 95 degrees.
The last 2 digits are the orifice size of the jet you are using; the smaller the number, the smaller the orifice for waterflow. For example, jet 11002 will have a smaller orifice than jet numbers 11003 or 11004.
Equipment with Jets
Carpet Wands, Stair Wands, Upholstery Tools, Detail/Hand Tools, Rotary Extraction Tools, Sprayers; any equipment that connects to a solution line and is designed for hot water extraction almost always has built-in jets sized and numbered for that particular piece of equipment.
